Park Outreach was inspired by a few homeless individuals gathered at a public park in Georgia.
These folks were sitting at a picnic bench under a shelter to stay out of the wind on a chilly Sunday morning when I jogged by. I thought to myself…. Why weren’t they in church? Were they dressed warm enough? Were they hungry? Do they have a job?
I thought wouldn’t it be great if our family and friends could help them somehow? I decided to get in my car and go home when I heard a voice in my head say “Go talk to them about your idea”
I walked back to the park benches where they had gathered and asked, “Can I tell you about an idea I just had when I saw you sitting here?” A man named Edward said “Sure, sit down.”
“I had an idea that we could meet here in the park on a weekly basis. We would pay you to come and listen to a 20 to 25-minute personal challenge, bring some food and coffee. Hopefully, as we continue to meet, we might encourage other people and companies to contribute money, food, clothing, job training, and job opportunities. Every week we will have a sign in sheet and track attendance so that you can represent you are showing up and use us as a job character reference. What do you think?”
They loved it! That following Sunday we had our first meeting and Park Outreach was born.
Park Outreach provides a weekly program that gives attendees that are homeless and less fortunate, financial assistance, food, and clothing for attending its faith based program hosted in local parks. The program includes: business, health, and faith based training and equipping skills. Our goal is to integrate our attendees from living in the park back into the mainstream of the community.
